Florida's back-to-school sales tax holiday will be held Aug. 1-31 this year, a departure from the two-week holiday of prior years.

Ben Meadows, an assistant professor of economics at UAB, said the average family with an elementary school student will spend around $800 to $900 a year in school supplies. He said the goal of this holiday is to benefit families working with limited means through a tax break.
