The U.S. Justice Department wants to ensure Oregon National Guard troops remain federalized while appeal is heard.

The National Guard arrived in the Coachella Valley Monday morning at FIND Food Bank in Indio. Personnel will assist food bank staff. The presence of California National Guard troops comes after Gov. Gavin Newsom announced late last month he would deploy soldiers in this manner.

California officials have asked a federal district judge to enjoin the Trump administration from using the National Guard in Los Angeles, arguing the high appeals court order allowing the federalization has been treated as a “blank check” to use the forces beyond the Golden State.
