Elon Musk, unofficial adviser to President Donald Trump in his capacity as head of Department of Government Efficiency, is seeking a purge of waste, fraud and abuse in government spending. But it seems he is looking the other way when it comes to the millions of dollars Trump himself is costing the American taxpayers.

Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency claims to have already made more than $100bn of savings, but only a handful of departments registered any drops in spending in the first full month of the new administration.
