Maine Democrats appear poised to retain a majority in the state House of Representatives and Senate following Tuesday's election despite gains by Republicans who flipped several seats. The preliminary results from Tuesday's legislative races showed Democrats winning at least 77 seats in the 151-member House.

Democrats are poised to maintain their trifecta of power between the governor’s office and both chambers in the 132nd Maine Legislature. Every race has not yet been called by The Associated Press but enough to confirm Democratic control of the Maine Senate.

On Wednesday Maine Senate Democrats announced they hold at least 20 of the 35 seats with one seat now too close too call.

Maine Senate Democrats have chosen Sen ... Daughtry was one of two primary sponsors of the paid family leave bill – the other was Democratic state Rep. Kristen Cloutier of Lewiston. The bill passed into law in 2023, and is set to take effect in 2025.

Meanwhile, Republicans in the House and Senate reelected their two top leaders and selected two new faces to serve as assistant leaders.

On Friday in Augusta, Maine House Republicans re-elected Representative Billy Bob Faulkingham of Winter Harbor to serve as their leader.

Both parties have started to select their leadership for the new state legislature. Democrats retained control of the Maine Senate, and they've already picked Senator Mattie Daughtry of Brunswick as their new leader.
