Barrick Gold has suspended operations at its Porgera gold mine in Papua New Guinea until Thursday after tribal violence in the region killed at least 20.

A July 2024 scoping study has proposed gold production from low-strip openpit mining of more than 97% measured and indicated mineral resources.

A series of shootouts between rival tribes over a disputed gold mine has left at least 30 people dead in Papua New Guinea, police said on Monday. Security forces have been given emergency powers to stop the fighting - including the use of "lethal force" - according to the country's police commissioner.
