The Trump administration deported eight migrants convicted of various crimes to South Sudan after weeks of legal back-and-forth between district courts, the Justice Department, and ultimately the Supreme Court, which twice ruled the deportations could take place.

The Trump administration will be able to send eight migrants held in Djibouti for weeks to South Sudan, where they fear they will face violence, after a flurry of court activity on Friday.

Courts blocked the handover after lawyers raised concerns of torture. Then the Supreme Court intervened to allow the Trump administration’s plan to move forward.
