Mads Pedersen claims his third victory in the opening five stages of the Giro d'Italia as Britain's Tom Pidcock finishes third in Matera.

Mads Pedersen won the fifth stage of the Giro d'Italia on Wednesday. The Dane edged out Edoardo Zambanini in an exciting finish in a close uphill sprint. Pedersen secured his third victory in this Giro and retained the leader's jersey.

Mads Pedersen won a tight sprint to the line on Wednesday to collect his third stage win of this year's Giro d'Italia and cement his overall lead. Of his three stage wins so far, Pedersen had to work hardest for this one after falling behind the pack led by his own teammate Mathias Vacek two kilometres from the finish line.
