Between Aug. 1 and April 9, more than 2,400 suspected or confirmed norovirus outbreaks were reported to a CDC monitoring system, roughly double for the same period a year earlier.

Thus far in 2025, the CDC has issued notifications on 16 separate cruise outbreaks, outpacing the yearly totals from 2024 and 2023. Here's what the CDC advises.

Norovirus has been linked to twelve outbreaks on cruise ships in 2025, sickening nearly 1,500 people, according to CDC data.

There were 10 gastrointestinal outbreaks in 2019, and 11 each in 2018 and 2017, according to CDC records. Norovirus was also the cause in many of those cases.

Now, CBS News reports, the job of inspecting, monitoring and assisting cruise ships with viral outbreaks such as Norovirus will be handled by 12 remaining U.S. Public Health Service officers.

The CDC documented a dozen outbreaks on ships in just the first four months of 2025, mostly from norovirus. Ten of those ships departed from, or docked in, Florida or both.

So far in 2025, the CDC has reported 11 outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness on board cruise ships, including the Queen Mary 2 infection. Of these instances, nine were caused by norovirus.
