If you have a bike with good low gearings, you can find a zone and grind it out. I trained last year with a series of training rides, each of about half-a triple (60 miles, 5000 ft of climbing).

Firstly, I seem to remember that dropping one kilo of non-rotational weight equated to about a 1.25% time saving on climbs. 10% would be super though. I agree that riding a heavier bike doesn't make you stronger, training is all about intensity not speed.

I know STP is only 2 days, so my additional tips: - Eat immediately after your ride to recover. - Sleep, and get as much of it as possible (at least 8 hours) - Be well rested for the next day. - Stretch + massage your body if you can.
