Although the Civil War officially began when Confederate troops shelled Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, the fighting didn’t commence in earnest until the Battle of First Manassas, fought just 25 miles from Washington D.C. The National Park Service has discovered and excavated a Civil War surgeon’s burial pit at Manassas National Battlefield Park. In partnership with forensic experts at the Smithsonian, we recovered two Union soldiers and several amputated limbs from the Battle of Second Manassas. This is the first time an intact surgeon’s burial pit from the Civil War has been studied by professional archeologists.
