| Flanders Fields 14-18

During the Battle of Passchendaele, Captain Ronald Moorhouse was mortally wounded while advancing with his company on the first objective. A short time later, Lieutenant Colonel Harry Moorhouse was shot dead by a sniper, as he left his headquarters to try and find medical help for his son. Neither body was recovered. Today, both men are commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial in Flanders Fields. | Flanders Fields 14-18

Over 60,000 Australians and over 16,000 New Zealanders died serving in World War One. Thousands of them are buried or commemorated in Flanders Fields. How will you be remembering them in the lead up to Anzac Day? On 25 April, a Dawn Service and the inauguration of the New Zealand "Pou Maumahara" (a Māori memorial carving) will be held at Buttes New British Cemetery. Find more information about this event via the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917: https://www.passchendaele.be/en/Configuratie/Cal

Passchendaele had been made into productive farmland via an intricate series of irrigation and drainage infrastructure. Three years of artillery had totally destroyed the system of dikes and ditches leaving a shelltorn, muddy, swamp. In 1917 this was compounded by the early arrival of the fall rains. The resulting scene was a sea of brown muck moonscapes. With deadly puddles in every shell hole that could swallow a few Artaxs (The Neverending Story) This misery inspired Siegfried Sassoon to writ

This Day In WWI

The 31st July 2017 marked the 100th anniversary of the first day of the Battle of Passchendaele. This battle became infamous for the 60,083 British deaths and the torrential rain which lead to a quagmire of mud. These stunning poppy pins have been designed to pay tribute to each one of the fallen British soldiers from the Battle of Passchendaele. Made from British brass artillery shell fuses found on the battlefields sites, each pin contains earth recovered from the fields and mixed with red and

The Battle of Passchendaele (Third Battle of Ypres), which began on July 31, 1917, stands as one of the most tragic symbols of the First World War. The offensive opened with the largest artillery barrage ever launched by Britain, with more than 4 million shells fired at German positions. Infantry advanced behind the bombardment, supported by the deployment of heavy tanks intended to break through enemy lines. Nature, however, soon reshaped the battlefield. Relentless rain turned the shattered gr
