We don’t start trapping beaver until hunting season is over and for us, that makes this weekend the start of our winter trapping season. Every trapper needs a dedicated space for fur handling but when it’s not being actively used the fur shed often turns into a broom closet. Tonight we’re starting off our season by cleaning up the fur shed and knocking the cob webs off our equipment. When you’re trapping beavers in the winter you’re going to end up with some ice on the fur. Don’t pull it off in the field! That ice is frozen to the fur and when it’s ripped off the fur comes with it. This leaves bald spots in the pelt and lowers its value. Instead take it home and thaw the beaver until that ice falls off on its own. Sometimes, when trapping through the ice a beaver can freeze to the ice itself.
