Johnson, sign the historic Civil Rights Act of 1964. On This Day: In 1964, President Johnson had a brief telephone conversation with Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy in which Kennedy reported on the agreement reached with Senator Everett Dirksen on the Civil Rights Bill.
