POKE SALLET WILD LUNCH 🌱 Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) is an abundant native plant that is well known for being toxic when consumed, however, it is also known for being edible and medicinal. In order to eat pokeweed, certain preparations are needed. Because the leaves are technically toxic, they must be boiled 2-3 times in order to render them safe to consume. Today I made poke sallet with a twist. Instead of using the traditional bacon and onions, I decided to use ground lamb and ramps. I al

Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) is hard to miss with its towering stalks, striking magenta stems, and clusters of deep purple berries. It’s beautiful. It’s also TOXIC ☠️And yet… for generations, it’s been foraged, cooked, and eaten—especially in Appalachia, the rural South, and among communities who had to turn adversity into sustenance. The dish is called poke sallet—not “salad,” despite the spelling. The key is preparation:🌱Only young, tender spring leaves or shoots should be used.🌱Peel off

Some people regard Pokeweed berries (Phytolacca americana) as a lookalike, but if you can recognize the compound leaves, this won’t be an issue! Another reason why it’s important to identify the compound leaves is to see that the arrangement is opposite. If you can’t do that, a more likely mistake would be Devil’s Walking Stick (Aralia spinosa), which has very similar berry clusters. Not confident in spotting compound leaves and leaf arrangement? No problem! I have a entire FREE Tree & Shrub ID

Poke root is one of my go-to lymphatic stimulants – and that's where it really shines in my clinical practice. I use it topically for sore throats and ear infections with kids all the time. You can make a salve from the root (and because it's a low-dose botanical, one root makes enough medicine for your whole community). When I'm working with ear infections, I'm applying it where the lymph is concentrated – behind the ear or in front of the ear – and doing some manual lymphatic drainage to help

🍃 Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) is a large abundant north american plant that most people know quite well. As children, you were most likely warm to steer clear of this plant due to its toxicity. But although this plant is known for being toxic, it's also an amazing medicine and food. 🥗 In order to consume pokeweed, certain preparations are needed. Because the leaves are technically toxic, they must be boiled 2-3 times in order to render them safe to consume. TRADITIONAL POKE SALLET RECIPE:

POKE SALLET / SALLIT / SALAD - a dish that shows up in indigenous, african american, appalachian, and rural southern culture using pokeweed, phytolacca americana. Poisonous when raw, but thankfully its toxic components are water soluble and/or heat sensitive! I always loved the pokeweed plants in my Grammy and Grandad’s backyard, and once in passing they mentioned a dish from their younger years using the early shoots before they wete too dangerous to eat. It took until ny 20’s, after their pass

American poke weed! I feel that this is one of the most misunderstood plants around and it just so happens to be one of my favorite plants. It serves as a traditional food, medicine, and dye. Despite it being toxic, it has a long history of use down here in the south; especially with the Indigenous nations. My ancestors used poke as a natural remedy to heal all sort of ailments and imbalances within the body. #pokeweed #pokesallet #toxicplants #deadlyplants #poisonousplants #medicinalplants #ced

RISE | Austin Black Freedom Communities on Instagram: "Ms. Flo walks us through how to make poke salad — a traditional Southern dish made from the pokeweed plant (Phytolacca americana). Pokeweed grew abundantly where she’s from in Manchaca, Texas, but it has to be handled with care. The plant is poisonous if not prepared correctly, which is why it must be washed thoroughly and boiled multiple times, with the water discarded each time, to make it safe to eat. Ms. Flo is featured in our upcoming f

Juliet Blankespoor on Instagram: "1) If you live in the US, you can practice herbal medicine without a license, certification, or registration. However, you cannot “diagnose,” “prescribe,” or “treat” (unless you have a medical license in another field that confers those rights), but you can legally “recommend,” “educate about,” and “suggest” specific herbs. 🌿 2)Some herbs closely straddle the divide between medicine and poison.
