It’s a girl for Naserian! As is a time-honoured tradition among our ex-orphans, the proud mum returned ‘home’ this weekend to introduce her brand new daughter to the people who raised her. We rescued Naserian back in 2004. After growing up in our care, first at the Nursery and then at our Ithumba Reintegration Unit, she reclaimed her place in the wilds of northern Tsavo. Baby elephants are very curious - one might even say nosy. While some of the orphans in our care flop right down and go to sleep at night, others take a while to settle. This time, its Kinyei who isn’t ready to call it a night, instead enjoying a surreptitious slurp from the pail as a nightcap. You might also spy freshly-cut branches and a ball in her stable, offering fun and food during the night in equal measure.
